Harvey Mudd Welcomes New Associate Dean of Residence Life

Harvey Mudd College has hired Leslie Hughes as associate dean of residence life.

Hughes will work to further develop and define the residence life program at Harvey Mudd, teaming with fellow members of the Office of Dean of Students and with proctors and mentors. Hughes said she is eager to enhance the student residential experience by collaborating with other campus offices, including the Office of Academic Affairs, Facilities and Maintenance and Campus Safety.

“I look forward to building relationships with students and campus constituents to learn what needs exist within the DOS office and, specifically, residence life at Harvey Mudd,” says Hughes. According to Hughes, the role is about balancing the necessary functions and operations of a typical residence life program with the needs of a talented and unique student body.

Hughes possesses a strong background in higher education administration. At Salem College in North Carolina, Hughes was director of residence life from 2007 to 2011 before being promoted to assistant dean of students, a title she held until coming to Harvey Mudd. Prior to Salem College, she worked as residence director at Peace College.

Hughes received a bachelor of science degree in art therapy from Indiana Wesleyan University, where, as a resident advisor, she discovered she enjoyed working with students. She went on to earn a master of education in student personnel administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2011.

“I believe that learning can happen in many ways and in many settings,” says Hughes. “I am passionate about helping students discover their unique identities as they explore their lives and learning outside of the classroom.”
