Harvey Mudd College Division of Student Affairs staff have been preparing since spring to welcome the Class of 2028. On Aug. 15, they welcomed 50 students for the Summer Institute, during which participants engaged in workshops on topics like emotional agility, effective communication and time management. They also focused on wellbeing through meditations, journaling and creating self-care plans. Academic preparation included mock lectures, group projects and study skills sessions. Students and professors bonded over lunches, and students were paired with peer mentors for ongoing support. The Summer Institute blended college preparation, community building and skill development.

Additionally, 23 international students arrived in August for the New International Student and Scholar Orientation (NISSO). They joined Summer Institute sessions and specific programs to help them acclimate to U.S. college life, including workshops on immigration, campus policies and cultural differences. They received practical assistance with banking and public transportation and participated in social events with international students from other Claremont Colleges. NISSO provided a supportive and interactive introduction to their new environment.

The entire Class of 2028, consisting of 233 first-year students and four transfer students, will be welcomed to campus Aug. 22. New Student Orientation, planned by Campus Life staff, three orientation directors and more than 30 student mentors, offers an incredible start to the academic year. This includes 12 asynchronous sessions over the summer and 15 in-person sessions Aug. 22–25, including a trip to the Knott’s Berry Farm amusement park. The Orientation events and workshops and the Orientation Adventure trip are designed to promote a positive transition and warm welcome to the Mudd community.
