Diversity at Harvey Mudd College
In 2007, Harvey Mudd College established a Strategic Vision that features six themes designed to meet the needs of its students, local community and the world at large. The third theme of the Strategic Vision is “Unsurpassed excellence and diversity at all levels.” Prior to this, in 2000, the College created the Blueprint for Diversity, which sought to develop and implement programs to improve the campus climate for diverse populations. The Blueprint for Diversity made a pledge “to promote an atmosphere that values the dignity and upholds the right of every individual, to raise the community’s awareness and understanding of diversity issues and to recruit and retain community members from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.”
Harvey Mudd’s commitment to fostering excellence and diversity on campus and in the wider scientific community doesn’t end with the FAST Program. In addition to campus organizations like the Society of Professional Latinos in STEM (SPLS), Black Lives and Allies at Mudd (BLAM), the Society for Women Engineers, FEMunion and the Office of Institutional Diversity, Mudd students can take advantage of a wide variety of diversity resources sponsored in conjunction with the other Claremont Colleges.
We also support our students with extensive financial aid packages; typically, over 70 percent of our students receive need-based and/or merit-based financial aid. FAST participants are particularly encouraged to apply for the President’s Scholarship Program, our most prestigious merit award. President’s scholars, selected for their leadership potential as well as academic achievement, receive four-year, renewable, full-tuition scholarships.
