Harvey Mudd started accepting self-reported test scores in November 2017 for students applying for first-year and transfer admission. We made this change in our policy in order to alleviate some of the stress and cost of applying to Harvey Mudd.

Since 2020, we announced these additional changes to our previous standardized testing policy:

  1. For the high school classes of 2021 and 2022, HMC will be ACT/SAT optional for all applicants.
  2. HMC extends its ACT/SAT optional pilot through 2023.
  3. HMC extends its ACT/SAT optional pilot for an additional year, through 2024.
  4. HMC extends its ACT/SAT optional pilot for an additional year, through 2025.

We will continue to accept self-reported test scores but want to emphasize that students who do not or can not submit test scores will not be at a disadvantage in our admission process, including for merit scholarships.

Only depositing students who requested that we consider their ACT/SAT scores will be required to submit official ACT/SAT score reports. Of course, any discrepancies between self-reported and official test scores may affect a student’s offer of admission and place in the class.

Which test scores can I self-report?

  • ACT (we do not consider the optional ACT Writing)
  • SAT (we do not consider the optional SAT Essay)
  • AP
  • IB
  • DET, TOEFL or IELTS (International Applicants only)

How do I self-report my test scores?

  • Submit your scores through the HMC Applicant Hub.
  • Enter your scores in the testing section of the Common Application.

By when should I self-report my test scores?

  • Early Decision I – November 30
  • Early Decision II – January 25
  • Regular Decision – February 5
  • Transfer – April 10

What about SAT subject test scores?

We will no longer be considering SAT subject test scores so they are not accepted by our self-reported test scores form (via the HMC Applicant Hub).

Even if they are submitted via the testing section of the Common Application, SAT subject tests scores are not displayed during application review.

Will we still superscore?

Yes. We will continue to consider your highest section scores across different sittings and will combine your highest section scores between the ACT and SAT.

Should I self-report all of my scores?

You are welcome to submit only your highest section scores. If you choose to report all of your scores, we will superscore them for you.

  • If you self-report your scores through the HMC Applicant Hub, you will be required to include the total/overall score and all section scores.
  • If you self-report your scores through the Common Application, you will indicate the number of times you have taken each test, but enter only the highest score for each section. While this is sufficient, we encourage you to self-report all scores through the HMC Applicant Hub.

How many times can I submit the self-reported test scores form?

As many times as you need. After submitting the form, the text “Submit New” will appear next to your most recent submission; click this text to submit additional scores. You are not able to edit previous submissions so please email corrections to admission@hmc.edu.

How do I access the HMC Applicant Hub?

You are given access to the HMC Applicant Hub after you submit, and we download your application. You will receive an email from admission@hmc.edu with instructions to access to the HMC Applicant Hub.
