My research group focuses on using computational techniques to improve the efficiency of catalytic reactions. Catalysts are used in 80% of manufactured products and contribute to 20% of the United States Gross Domestic Products (GDP). However, there is a growing need to develop cheaper and more environmentally sustainable catalytic processes.
In our current study, we investigate using cheap, earth-abundant, and environmentally sustainable salts to convert environmental pollutant molecules into useful drugs and materials. To achieve this, researchers in my group use various industry-standard and cutting-edge computational chemistry software tools, including Schrödinger and Gaussian suites of programs for molecular mechanics and quantum mechanics calculations, and Gaussview and PyMOL for molecular visualization. Additionally, we have developed Python scripts that researchers can use to process large datasets. If they wish, they may develop their programming skills along the way.
Our team places great emphasis on scientific communication. Researchers in my group will have ample opportunities to present their work in oral and written forms to audiences within and beyond the chemistry community. This helps in developing critical skills that are transferable to any industry.
