Barium titanate (BTO) is a ferroelectric material used in capacitors because of its high dielectric constant, which may be even higher in nanoparticle form. The Sandia National Laboratories Clinic team investigated the dielectric constant of BTO nanoparticles as a function of particle diameter by manufacturing composites of BTO embedded in low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The nanoparticles are deagglomerated by a ball mill before being dispersed into LDPE and subsequently injection molded into disks. Electrodes are then added to measure capacitance.
