The Nike Clinic team worked with the Materials R&D team at Nike Air Manufacturing Innovation to study bonding between thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) sheets, in order to inform manufacturing processes. The first phase of the project was building an electro-mechanical sample preparation tool, which bonds two flat sheets of TPU together using varying bonding times, temperatures and pressures. In the second phase, the team conducted peel tests on a tensile tester to quantify the strength of the sample’s bond while compiling a comprehensive user manual of the sample evaluation methodology.
