WordPress: Create New Page or Post
Learn how to create a new Page or Post in Harvey Mudd’s WordPress website.
Note: not every part of the website uses Posts. If the site you are editing is not configured for Posts then the option to create them will be absent.
Page vs Post: What’s the Difference?
WordPress defines the two types of webpage that you might create as either a Page or a Post (this may seem confusing as both types create what you’d call a “webpage”).
Most webpages on the Mudd website are the WordPress type Page. This webpage you are reading is of the WordPress type Page.
The Post content type is used for what you might call blog posts. At Mudd, the news articles we publish are created using the Post content type.
Other places we use the Post content type include:
- Admission blog
- HSA announcements
- Presidential announcements
- Physics departmental news
Both Pages and Posts are created in a similar fashion. The main difference is how they are organized and displayed on the website.
Page Organization
Imagine individual Pages as branches of a tree.
- Pages are organized in a hierarchical manner. e.g. this webpage is a child of the WordPress How-Tos webpage.
- Pages are normally accessed from a dropdown menu.
Post Organization
Imagine all Posts in a big bucket.
- Posts are organized in a categorical matter.
- A Post may have one or more category.
- Users can filter how they view a list of Posts based on these categories.
- A Post about students conducting physics research may have the categories students, physics and research.
Steps to Create New Page
- From the Dashboard, hover over “New” in the admin bar and select either “Page.”
- Alternatively, on the left menu, hover over “Pages” and select “Add New.”
- Either method will open up the editor with a new blank page.
Steps to Create New Post
- If your site has a blog, creating a new post is very similar to creating a new page.
- From the dashboard, hover over “New” and select “Post.”
- You can also hover over “Posts” on the left menu and select “Add New.”
- Once again, you’ll get the editor, but this time for a blank post.
