Visiting Assistant Professors of Engineering 2025-26

Harvey Mudd College invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor for our general engineering program for the 2025-26 academic year, with a possibility to renew for the 2026-27 year by mutual agreement. The Department of Engineering seeks manufacturing experts with production systems experience who can excel in teaching a broadly-based undergraduate curriculum (https://www.hmc.edu/engineering/curriculum/). Candidates with a mix of industrial and academic experience are especially encouraged to apply.

One of two types of credentials are required, either (1) a Ph.D. or equivalent (terminal) degree in industrial engineering, manufacturing, or a closely related field, or (2) a masters degree in engineering combined with substantial (>7 years) industrial experience in manufacturing engineering. An ideal candidate should have demonstrated leadership in manufacturing practice or practical implementation of engineering solutions.

Applicants should demonstrate commitment to teaching excellence. Teaching opportunities include the department’s required courses in engineering sciences, participation on teaching teams in the design and systems engineering sequences, developing courses in the applicant’s area of specialty, and supervising sponsored projects in the Engineering Clinic program. Advising student teams through the Engineering Clinic program requires site visit travel and regular meetings with students, student leaders, project sponsors, and the Engineering Clinic program staff.  Candidates should provide evidence of excellence in teaching and their ability to increase students’ general and multidisciplinary engineering skills.

Applicants should also demonstrate commitment to professional growth. Many forms of professional engagement are celebrated at the college including consulting and academic publishing in a wide variety of fields.

Finally, applicants should demonstrate commitment to promoting equity and inclusion among diverse students and colleagues. Among the criteria for appointment are experience with students from diverse backgrounds and/or the ability to teach those students effectively. Candidates from groups historically underrepresented in engineering are encouraged to apply.

The salary is $85,000 for 9 months of teaching responsibilities.

Applicants should submit: a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, and the names of at least three references. Candidates should provide evidence of excellence in teaching and the ability to increase students’ hands-on engineering skills. For full consideration, applications should be received by March 14, 2025, but applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
