Annual Fund
What is the Annual Fund?
Each year, alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and friends from across the decades unite around the Annual Fund to make transformative educational experiences possible for Mudders pursuing their dreams.
The impact of your unrestricted giving can be seen everywhere at Harvey Mudd! Your support is reflected in the enthusiasm of students, the dedication of professors and the endless opportunities for growth and discovery.
Annual Fund gifts flow directly into the college’s operating budget and enable the college to respond to unexpected challenges, seize new opportunities and pursue the mission.
Some areas of your unrestricted gifts support:
- Financial aid
- Scholarships
- Transformational educational experiences in the classroom
- Community engagement opportunities
- Spiritual life
- Student health and wellness initiatives and more
Now, when you make a gift in support of the Annual Fund, you empower the next generation of passionate problem-solvers.
Doesn’t Tuition Cover the Cost of a Harvey Mudd Education?
In reality, tuition payments (a.k.a. student revenue) only provide 51% of the College’s revenue. Other sources of revenue—including private gifts and payout from our endowment—are needed to cover the difference between the true cost of a Harvey Mudd education and the price paid by students and families—even those paying full tuition.
Why does Annual Fund Participation Matter?
There’s strength in numbers. Your one gift works together with other gifts from alumni, parents and friends to create countless opportunities for our extraordinary students and noteworthy faculty. Your participation matters because:
- Approximately six percent of Harvey Mudd’s annual operating budget comes from the Annual Fund every year, and that’s a powerful thing by any measure.
- Every Annual Fund gift supports the college’s reputation. Corporations, foundations and families consider alumni participation as an indicator of graduate satisfaction.
- Gifts of any size make a difference!
Can I Designate My Gift to Something Specific?
While gifts to the Annual Fund gifts are not restricted in their use, donors can specify a broad area within the operating budget where they prefer for their funds to be directed, such as student financial aid and operating support for specific academic departments.
If you are interested in further specifying the use of your gift for areas not typically funded through the operating budget or to create a permanent endowment, please contact Harvey Mudd College’s Office of Advancement for additional information at development@hmc.edu or 1.844.GIVE.HMC (1.844.448.3462).
Are There Tax Benefits?
The Internal Revenue Service recognizes Harvey Mudd College as a 501(c) 3 tax-exempt organization and, therefore, gifts are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law. Some donors take advantage of additional tax benefits by choosing to make gifts of appreciated stock or by establishing life-income gifts, such as charitable annuities and trusts.
What is Harvey Mudd’s Fiscal Year?
The fiscal year mirrors the academic year beginning July 1 and ending June 30.
Increasing Your Gift’s Impact
A few ways to increase the impact of your gift:
Recurring Gifts
An easy way to increase giving because smaller monthly deductions add up to a larger annual gift.
Corporate Matching
Maximize your gift with matching dollars from your employer.
Gifts of Appreciated Securities and Mutual Funds
Gifts of this type often are more tax advantageous. Please contact Office of Annual Giving.
