Former student and colleague

Reflecting on my 50-plus years of association with Harvey Mudd College, the figure of Courtney Coleman looms large in my memory. Even before I arrived as an incoming freshman in the fall of 1971, his influence was guiding my trajectory. My high school math teacher and mentor had the good fortune to attend a summer mathematics teaching course given by him. So impressed was he by Professor Coleman’s combination of warmth and brilliance, he insisted that I *must* attend HMC, joking that if I didn’t, he’d no longer speak to me! I was privileged to be taught by him in my first semester at Mudd, and was later honored to have him as a faculty colleague. His wit and kindness will be missed but never forgotten.

Court was a gentleman and a scholar in the truest sense. A quiet leader amongst the faculty, it was no accident that he was elected as the inaugural Chair of the Faculty when the job was created. He had a very warm sense of humor and was a joy to know. He never had an unkind word for anyone, and I always looked forward to my time with him.

As a mathematics major in the early 1970s, I had Dr. Coleman as a professor for several different classes. He was the best at explaining difficult concepts in the clearest possible way. He treated students with respect and kindness. A truly gentle and kind person.
