Departmental colleague
Gary was always so wonderfully alive, and so dedicated to his students and to the work of the HSA department. I had the pleasure of being his departmental colleague for almost thirty years and miss his humor and penetrating insights regarding the affairs of the college or whatever was on his mind. I had looked forward to still seeing him in our hallways now and then–he led a full life, but it ended too soon.

Gary was a great storyteller, whether it was over lunch or at a faculty meeting. I loved the stories he told about his adventures outside of Harvey Mudd, and I was often struck by thoughtful remarks he gave at our faculty meetings. He was an eloquent extemporaneous speaker who presented a clear-eyed point of view, typically grounded in a strong sense of faculty governance or shared governance. He was a thoughtful and effective advocate of the faculty as he helped tell our story. He is missed.
