Ann Edminster

Fellow member of LEED Steering Committee

Malcolm was a truly exceptional colleague — completely genuine, warm, and good-humored. He also had a sharp intellect and complete professional integrity. I mourn his loss. The green building community is the lesser for his passing, but the greater for his contributions.

Jean Strauss

A Former First Lady of HMC

I weep.
I last saw Malcolm at Commencement, onstage, leading the proceedings alongside President Klawe. He was full of life, full of joy, and very proud.
He was the gentlest trustee, the one you could confide in, the one who always looked into your eyes and asked how you were.
Malcolm Lewis defined Harvey Mudd College: he was a combination of extraordinary brain power and humanity, a steward of the earth, generous, committed, caring.
His life is an inspiration for all who knew him, and for all who follow…

Served with him on BOT as HMCAA Trustee Rep

Malcolm was one of the first Trustees I met as a student at HMC. When I became the ASHMC representative to the BOT, Malcolm was extremely welcoming and supportive. He helped sponsor and personally attended the social events organized to help students meet the Board members and build a stronger HMC community. He also inspired me to attend Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth (where he was also an alum) to continue my multi-disciplinary engineering education. I am honored to have known him. He will be deeply missed.

Lewis Fellow

I had the honor to work with Malcolm at CTG as the 2011 Lewis Industrial Fellow. On the first day of my internship, Malcolm dropped by my desk and gave me a big hug, to which I responded with a timid smile. “What kind of CEO is this?” I wondered. Later that week, Malcolm took me out to lunch, where he inspired me with the great passion he had in life and in the work that he did. One of my favorite memories of Malcolm took place when he drove a hydrogen car to work one day. During lunch, he enthusiastically explained to us how this new technology worked and how environmentally friendly it was. He pointed to the bottom of the car to show us a component, and then dropped to the floor to look at it, urging us to follow. Imagine the scene of a group of us in business attire in push-up position in the middle of a parking lot. His joy and curiosity was contagious.

Malcolm winked at me as I walked across the stage to receive my diploma from Mudd this past May. It was the same wink he gave me every time I caught his gaze during a meeting. I was excited to share such a significant moment with the most excellent and humble engineer I knew. I miss Malcolm deeply.

Friend

Malcolm was an unusually warm and thoughtful person. He was genuinely interested in people and their lives. And, of course, he cared very much for Harvey Mudd College and the Mudd community. I will miss him deeply.
