Lewis 2010 Research Fellow

I first met Mr. Lewis during Lewis Fellowship Dinner in 2009. I remember vividly how warm and encouraging he was to all the students who are being benefited by his sponsorship. I know he definitely changed my life since my course of life literally changed with Lewis Fellowship. But most of all, I feel great sorrow that his warm, happy smile is no more available to us. And that alone is a huge loss in so many people’s lives.

Peer

When I was a high school student visiting HMC for my interview it was Malcolm who showed me around the campus. I was very impressed. He became my image of a Harvey Mudd student. He was someone I wanted to emulate.

Tom Helliwell

Teacher, friend, colleague

How very sad it is to lose such a friend. Malcolm was so accomplished yet remained so modest, was so involved with his profession and his family, yet remained so dedicated to this college. He always listened sympathetically to any perceived problem and responded with kindness and wisdom.

How proud the college can be to have had such a magnificent alum. How much I will miss him.

Fellow Board Member

Malcolm was an amazing man whom I met while still a student at Mudd. He astounded me from the start with his obvious interest in others, his ever-present smile and enthusiasm, and his unselfish devotion to our great school. It was his encouragement and counsel that led to me joining the Alumni Board of Governors very shortly after graduating. Everyone associated with Mudd, past and present, owes a lot to Malcolm for his steady, constant, and long-term guidance and energy that have helped our community to achieve greatness.

Board activities

I first met Malcolm in 1975-1976 when he was on the Board of Trustees’ Student Affairs Committee and I was the student representative. He subsequently served a reference when I applied to graduate school and we continued to spend time together at school and Board functions when I served first on the AABoG and then as an alum trustee. Throughout all those years, Malcolm was a valued friend, providing advice and encouragement. A gentleman to the core whose striving for excellence impacted everything he touched. Thanks, Malcolm, for your generous spirit and all you did for HMC. RIP, good friend.
