You’re Invited to Join HMC for a Strategic Visioning Exercise – September 22, 2018

Dear Members of the HMC Community,

I am excited to announce that we will be holding a one-day workshop at HMC from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, to collaboratively develop a strategic vision for diversity, inclusion and equity over the next few years. We will be using the same strategic visioning process for this workshop as was used in the four workshops in fall 2006 that led to our strategic vision for the college, HMC 2020: Envisioning the Future. Lunch will be provided for everyone who attends.

During our 2006 strategic visioning session, we received a lot of input from all members of our community, including our faculty, staff, alumni, parents and students. Several positive changes came from suggestions made during that workshop, including:

• Students suggested a greater emphasis on developing and nurturing the whole person, which resulted in us adding a recital hall and art gallery to the Shanahan Center plans.
• Students and faculty shared the need for much improved academic spaces, including classrooms, clinic space and teaching labs, which led to building the Shanahan Center and renovating existing academic buildings including the Engineering Clinic space, Galileo Hall, the chemistry labs and ongoing plans to build a new academic building that will house Makerspace and the Computer Science Department, and renovate space for the Physics Department.
• Other results included increased resources for health and wellness as well as community engagement.

As our community moves toward further improvements in the area of diversity and inclusive excellence, please save the date and RSVP using the online form to join us for this important day of brainstorming and planning. The workshop is being organized by a steering committee led by me along with four co-chairs: faculty members Erika Dyson and Dagan Karp, and students Ronak Bhatia ’19 and Julia Wang ’20. Other committee members include faculty members Anna Ahn, Albert Dato, Lelia Hawkins, David Seitz, Brian Shuve, Talithia Williams and Jessica Wu; staff members Anna Gonzalez, Leslie Hughes, Arianna Figueroa and Brandon Ice; trustees Teresa Pineda ’06 and Kevin Schofield P’13 P’13; and alumni Obosa Obazuaye ’14 and Vai Viswanathan ’17.

The first step in preparing for this workshop is to collect suggestions for topics that the community would like to have discussed at the workshop.
