Kaitlin Tademy
Kaitlin Tademy (she/her), PhD, joins the Fall 2024 HMC faculty as Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics. Her research is in knot theory, the study of mathematical knots (which she calls “spicy circles”). More specifically, she likes to think about virtual torus knots, an area of knot theory which combines the well-understood torus knot and the not-so-well-understood virtual knot.
Kaitlin earned her Bachelors in Mathematics with a minor in Philosophy from Sam Houston State University and her Masters/PhD in Mathematics from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. Her academic background armors her with extensive teaching and mentorship experience. Throughout her academic career, she has been an active participant in the math community; presenting at conferences, joining panels, leading inclusive teaching workshops, and mentoring both high school and college students. She is most passionate about the EDGE program, a pre-doctoral math summer program for women and non-binary students pursuing PhD’s! It is no surprise that these opportunities and experiences have fertilized her passion in math education and whole-student teaching practices.
Outside of math, Kaitlin is an artist, a podcast/audiobook enthusiast, and an advocate for “cute drinkity drinks”. If you don’t know how to break the ice in office hours, ask her about one of these things!
