Galaxy Collisions and the Birth of Quasars

Quasars are some of the most powerful objects in the Universe, and their study allows us to probe the early Universe. However, there are still many uncertainties regarding their nature and, in particular, the way in which they are formed. In this talk, I review the role of supermassive black holes, starbursts, and galaxy collisions in the life of quasars.

Colloquium

Junior and senior physics majors attend our biweekly colloquium series, held on Tuesday afternoons at 4:30 p.m. in Shanahan B460. The talks are open to all students and to the public, and are frequently attended by scientists from the other Claremont Colleges, Cal Poly Pomona, and others. The series features speakers from a broad range of institutions and fields of physics.
