Observing the Origin of the Universe

In the past century our knowledge about the Universe went from one fact -the sky is dark at night – to hundreds of facts from the Cosmic MicrowaveBackground, observations of distant supernovae, and baryon oscillations.

We now know the Universe is so big that we can see nearly all the wayback to the origin of the Universe by observing the oldest light in theUniverse,” which is the CMB. From this we can infer the processes thatoccurred during the first picosecond after the Big Bang that producedthe seeds that grew to form galaxies and large scale structure.”

Colloquium

Junior and senior physics majors attend our biweekly colloquium series, held on Tuesday afternoons at 4:30 p.m. in Shanahan B460. The talks are open to all students and to the public, and are frequently attended by scientists from the other Claremont Colleges, Cal Poly Pomona, and others. The series features speakers from a broad range of institutions and fields of physics.
