CARES Act Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund Reporting

In support during the Coronavirus pandemic, the federal government has passed the following sources of emergency aid to institutions of higher education.

  1. The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act signed into law on March 27, 2020, includes a Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) that provided more than $14 billion in emergency funding to higher education.
  2. The Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2021 (CRRSA Act), was signed into law on Dec. 27, 2020, and provided an additional $22.7 billion to institutions of higher education.
  3. The American Rescue Plan Act (ARP) was signed into law on March 11, 2021, provides an additional $39.6 billion in additional emergency aid to institutions of higher education.

On April 14, 2020, Harvey Mudd College signed and returned the Certification and Agreement to the Department of Education to receive the HEERF that was allocated to the college. Harvey Mudd College was allocated $516,332 and has used no less than $258,166, fifty percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act, to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students. On Jan. 19, 2021, Harvey Mudd College was allocated an additional $475,340 for institutional support and $258,166 from the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSA) to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students. Lastly, on May 19, 2021, Harvey Mudd College was allocated an additional $654,998 for institutional support and$655,000 from the American Rescue Plan (ARP) to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.

The College has been reviewing guidance from the Department of Education and has prioritized aid to students who have the highest need. The amount distributed will be updated on this page no later than 10 days after the calendar quarter (Jan. 10, April 10, July 10, and Oct. 10) per the Department of Education’s reporting requirements.

As of Dec. 31, 2020, Harvey Mudd College has distributed $193,500 in emergency financial aid grants to eligible students from HEERF I. The estimated total number of students at the institution eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 is 489. The total number of students who have received an Emergency Financial Aid Grant to Students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act is 493.

As of March 31, 2021, Harvey Mudd College has distributed $258,300 in emergency financial aid grants to eligible students from HEERF I; quarter period distribution was $64,800.

As of June 30, 2021, Harvey Mudd College has distributed the full amount allocated from HEERF I, II and III, for $1,171,332. The total number of students who are eligible and received an Emergency Financial Aid Grant to students under the CRRSAA and ARP is 372. It was determined that those enrolled during 2020–2021 (Fall and Spring) who filed a free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and received a Federal Pell Grant would receive a $4,000 check. Those enrolled during 2020-2021 (Fall and Spring) who filed a FAFSA, with Federal Methodology (FM) need and did not receive a Federal Pell Grant would receive a $1,880 check. Emails were sent out to eligible students for them to accept the aid and provide a remittance address.
